10 Steps to Writing and Post Your First Article

An article is a piece of written material which is ought to be to be published through broadcast, print or the Web. If you are a new writer interested in making money through writing, you may find the 10 easy steps below helpful in writing an article.

  1. Find inspiration

Writing isn’t creating something out of nothing. It is making a concept within you materialize. It is not every day that we stumble on an idea that would inspire us to create something about. Preparing or conditioning yourself before you begin is a vital step to make writing easy. Engage yourself in the environment, things, and people who bring out the enthusiasm and motivation within you. Stay away from distractions. Relax. Once you are inspired, everything else would follow without much difficulty. Another important thing to remember is that your brain doesn’t feed on stimulation alone. It is basic to provide its physiological needs. Water, air, enough rest and food make your brain function well. A healthy brain allows a healthy flow of thoughts. Take into account that when you don’t feel well, your brain stresses more if you work. Make sure you take care of your brain to produce good quality compositions.

  1. Choose a subject

As soon as you are ready to work, pick a subject to write about. If you are not given a specific topic at school or work, or if you don’t have anything in mind to write about, searching the web for topics could be helpful. Go for something that interests you. Prominent people, current events, sports, politics, art, music, and media are some of the fields where you could choose a topic from.  The moment you have decided on your subject, develop the title of your article. Your title must be clear, specific and concise.

  1. Select your audience

This is the step where you decide on which group of people you wanted to present your ideas to. This is also the stage where you ask yourself if your chosen subject matter would be interesting to the people who would potentially read it. Ask yourself which gender, age, occupation, or unit of the population you want to direct your message to.  If you want to write for academics, make sure that what you write is well-researched and is written in a neutral tone. If you intend to write for children, your statements and vocabulary should be easy to understand. Select which theme, language and style suits your prospective readers best.

  1. Make an outline

This is the phase where you make a draft or plan of the flow of ideas on your written material. Your outline helps you make an article that is organized and coherent. Make sure your outline will show the structure, sequence and relationship of your ideas.

  1. Elaborate

One thing you could do to expand your concept is to research. Research will give you more information about your subject. It will make your article more informative and detailed. Before writing, you could consider searching the web, reading books, and interviewing authority or people who has direct knowledge of your subject matter. Research allows you to write with substance. As soon as you’re finished gathering more information about your concept, you could finalize your outline.

  1. Start Writing

This is the moment you have been waiting for. Begin! Develop your concept into a full written composition. Write, write and write! Let the words flow. Be creative. You can use description, narration, comparison, chronological steps, or figures of speech to express your thoughts. A written piece usually consists of an introduction, body and conclusion. Your introduction functions as the overview or the teaser of your article’s content. The body contains the details or explanation of what the article is about. The conclusion is the part where you wrap up all of the ideas you presented on your written material.

  1. Proofread

After you have finished writing your article, you are not done yet! Editing and revising is what’s next. Word processing applications are equipped with spelling and grammar checkers, but they cannot always be very accurate. You could reread and analyze your work so you can find what it might have missed out. Review your grammar, punctuation and spelling. Check the wordiness of your article, too. There are also grammar-checking applications online which you could use. I would recommend Grammarly or Reverso.

  1. Use Plagiarism checking applications

Plagiarism is stealing the ideas of somebody else. It is punishable by law. Nobody wants a copied article. Evaluating for plagiarism is an important step, particularly if you plan to publish your written material online. Even if you don’t intend to, parts of your written material may resemble those that are already published. Things to remember to avoid plagiarism are using quotations for unoriginal statements and giving credits to your sources.  There are a couple of plagiarism checking applications online such as Copyscape, Plagscan, Duplichecker, etc. Most of them you could use free, but with limited functions or credits. Such plagiarism detecting software may also have the capability to assess grammar. Purchasing one would really come in handy, most especially if you intend to be a professional writer.

  1. Publish your work

You’re finally done! Good job! Give yourself a pat in the back. Now, this is the time to publish. Bring your masterpiece out to the public and be happy!

  1. Write again

Now that you have finished writing one, plan on your next. If writing is your passion, practice is fundamental in enhancing your skill. Make writing a habit! Write more, most especially when you are writing for a blog or a website which must be supplied with new articles regularly. Give your readers something to look forward to. Write again!

Everybody has their own writing style, pace, and method. The steps I have enumerated above are not standard procedures. They are guides that you could use simultaneously with your own technique. Why wait any longer? Write your own article now!
